Pacific Union "All God's People," June 16, 2023 S7 E12

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and proclaimed the freedom of all enslaved people in accordance with the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued more than two years earlier by President Abraham Lincoln.

Juneteenth represents a significant milestone in the nation's history as it symbolizes the end of slavery and the realization of freedom for Black Americans. Juneteenth has become a vital part of Black American culture and heritage. It’s a day for Black Americans to honor their ancestors, remember their history, and celebrate their identity.

Journey Films, known for their extensive work documenting religious life in America, has recently released a new film on PBS that should interest all Seventh-day Adventists. It is a two-hour documentary film called “SABBATH.” Told as a collection of short stories, SABBATH explores the history of one of the world's most important spiritual practices and considers its timeless relevance for a stressed-out, modern world.
From the Biblical accounts of Creation, to the Ten Commandments, to the Puritans landing in the New World, to the contemporary practice of a "tech-sabbath," SABBATH ties together history, cultural and health practices, diverse understandings, and varied responses to the invitation to make a weekly cycle of rest part of our daily lives. The Washington Post headlined its coverage by saying: “the documentary takes a deep dive into the ancient and modern practice of Sabbath.”

SABBATH is available on your PBS station’s platform right now. You can go to your local PBS station, enter in SABBATH and view the entire film. More information at links below:
